The cannabinoid-inflation phrase specifically describes a printed THC or CBD percentage that exceeds what the lab actually measured.

The data flow that produces this failure is the same across most operators: a lab tests the batch and issues a certificate of analysis (COA), Metrc serializes the package and produces a tag, the ERP or operational system hands the cannabinoid values and tag URL to a label generator, and a printer renders the result. If any handoff between those steps is stale, misconfigured, or out of order, the number on the printed package can diverge from the number on the COA — and the DCC sees the printed package.

Recalls in this category are overwhelmingly voluntary (operators self-reporting rather than DCC ordering) but their frequency has roughly doubled year over year from 2024 to 2025. Edibles, beverages, and infused pre-rolls are disproportionately represented because their labels carry more printed data — milligram dose math per serving, total servings, total cannabinoid load — and offer more surfaces where a substitution can land.
