What the data shows

California cannabis edibles do not get recalled for chemical contamination. They get recalled for label and data-pipeline failures — every single time in this dataset. The dominant DCC verbatim phrase is "Misbranded" or "Adulterated and Misbranded," typically alongside "Inaccurate Labeling (Cannabinoid inflation)" or "Attractive to Children" packaging findings. Mandatory recalls for edibles are vanishingly rare because the failure mode is not a safety hazard the regulator has to act on with urgency — it's a documentation or packaging failure the licensee can self-recall.

The mechanism is structural rather than chemical. Every edible has dose math printed on the label: mg THC per serving, total servings per package, total cannabinoid load, sometimes a CBD figure alongside. Each of those values flows from a lab COA through an ERP through a label generator through a printer, and if any step gets the math wrong — or substitutes a wrong COA, or mis-rounds the per-serving figure, or pulls the wrong cannabinoid value — the printed package no longer matches what the lab measured. The DCC sees the printed package.

For California cannabis edible operators: the recall risk you face is statistically not what's in the package. It's the data flow that produced the label on it.

About this data

Every recall on this page was published by the California Department of Cannabis Control on recalls.cannabis.ca.gov. Phenominal Consulting maintains an organized index of the portal, refreshed daily. Product types are categorized using the DCC's own "Product Type" field on each recall notice.

Category labels (contamination, label/data, mixed, other, packaging) are interpretive groupings applied by Phenominal Consulting based on the verbatim DCC reason language. They are not DCC's own classification.
